NTR to star as Phalke in SS Rajamouli-backed biopic?

Speculation is swirling around NTR following reports that he may take on the role of Dadasaheb Phalke, the revered “Father of Indian Cinema,” in an ambitious biopic titled “Made in India.”

The film, first announced by filmmaker SS Rajamouli in September 2023, has reignited public interest after recent developments hinted at NTR’s involvement—though no official confirmation has been made.

According to a report by Pinkvilla, Rajamouli, along with his son SS Karthikeya and Max Studios’ Varun Gupta, recently presented the final script to NTR. Sources suggest the actor was “blown away” by the narrative’s depth and the untold stories from Phalke’s life, reportedly giving a verbal nod to the project.

A Pan-India cinematic tribute

“Made in India” will be directed by National Award-winner Nitin Kakkar and is envisioned as a pan-Indian release in six languages. The film aims to chronicle the origins and rise of Indian cinema through the remarkable life of Phalke—who directed India’s first full-length feature, Raja Harishchandra (1913), and went on to make 95 films that laid the foundation for the industry.

Phalke’s story is as inspiring as it is poignant: from selling his belongings to travel to London and learn filmmaking, to struggling with poverty later in life. His passion and perseverance have reportedly resonated deeply with NTR, who is known for his commitment to challenging roles.

The biopic is being jointly produced by SS Karthikeya’s Showing Business and Varun Gupta’s Max Studios, with SS Rajamouli attached as presenter.

NTR’s packed slate

Despite the excitement, NTR’s current schedule could pose challenges for the project’s timeline. The actor is already committed to a string of high-profile films, including “War 2” with Ayan Mukerji, NTR 31 (tentatively titled Dragon) with Prashanth Neel, “Devara 2” with Koratala Siva, and an untitled film with director Nelson Dilipkumar.

With “Made in India” still awaiting an official greenlight and a production schedule, it remains to be seen when NTR might begin filming. However, if confirmed, the role would mark one of the most significant performances of his career—honoring a cinematic icon who changed the course of Indian film history.
