PM Modi to relaunch Capital City works in Amaravati

The Andhra Pradesh government has confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Amaravati on May 2, 2025, to relaunch the long-stalled construction of the state’s greenfield capital city and inaugurate a slew of new infrastructure projects. The announcement, made by Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand, marks a significant milestone in reviving Amaravati, envisioned as a world-class urban hub under Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s leadership.

Key highlights

Relaunch of Amaravati Capital Works: PM Modi will officially resume construction activities for Amaravati, with projects worth approximately ₹1 lakh crore. This includes infrastructure such as the state Secretariat, Legislative Assembly, High Court, and trunk roads, with a three-year timeline for completion. The event will take place near the State Secretariat, where the recent P-4 program was held, and is expected to draw around 5 lakh attendees.

New Project Launches: The Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for multiple development projects, including an international airport in Amaravati, for which the state is exploring land pooling to minimize disruption to farmers. Other initiatives include housing for government officials (3,500 apartments and 200 bungalows), 5,000 residences for economically weaker sections, and educational institutions under a dedicated Knowledge City.

These cover 360 km of trunk roads, water supply systems, and sewage treatment plants, supported by loans from the World Bank (₹6,600 crore), HUDCO (₹11,000 crore), and the Asian Development Bank.

Economic Vision: The state government aims to transform Amaravati into a global economic hub, projecting 1.5 million jobs and a GDP of $35 billion by 2050. The master plan, designed by UK-based Foster + Partners, includes nine theme cities and 27 townships across 217 square kilometers, with 30% of the 53,500-acre region dedicated to green and blue spaces.
