Telangana students are required to study Telugu

The Government of Telangana has issued a directive mandating that Telugu must be taught as a compulsory subject in all CBSE, ICSE, IB, and other board-affiliated schools within the state.

This decision aims to promote the Telugu language among students across various educational boards and will be effective from the academic year 2025-26 for Class I to IX and 2026-27 for Class X.

All schools must strictly comply with the mandate for Telugu language education for Classes I to X.

NEP

On the other hand, the Union government is proposing a new education policy (NEP) that stipulates students learn three languages—mother tongue, English, and a third language of choice, like Hindi, Russian, French, etc. The Tamil Nadu state government said the NEP’s new mandate is nothing but the Hindi imposition and strongly opposed the proposal.

The Telangana government didn’t make any statement on this proposal. Instead, it made this new rule for the Telugu language.
