Ashok Gajapathi Raju to become governor?

Buzz is building in political corridors over the possible appointment of Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju, a seasoned Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader and former Union Minister, as the Governor. While no official announcement has been made, sources within both the TDP and central government indicate that Raju’s name is under serious consideration for a gubernatorial post.

A distinguished political career

Hailing from Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, Ashok Gajapathi Raju brings with him a rich legacy of public service. With decades of political experience, including his tenure as Union Civil Aviation Minister (2014–2018) during the Modi government’s first term, Raju is known for his integrity, administrative acumen, and unwavering loyalty to the TDP.

His decision to opt out of the 2024 general elections only intensified rumors of a significant role being planned for him.

Known for his clean image and spiritual inclination, Raju is considered an ideal fit for the dignified and apolitical role of a Governor. His name reportedly came up during internal discussions in 2024, though no appointment was finalized at the time.

With the NDA regaining momentum in Andhra Pradesh, the timing now appears more favorable.

To be Tamilnadu governor

Apart from the current speculation, Raju was also previously linked to the chairmanship of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD)—a significant spiritual and administrative post. However, insiders now suggest that a Governor’s role is more likely, aligning more closely with his governance background and the NDA’s political calculus.

Insiders reveal that Union Home Minister Amit Shah considers Ashok Gajapathi Raju a suitable candidate for the post of Governor of Tamil Nadu. The state is set to hold assembly elections next year, and there is growing pressure for the current Governor, R.N. Ravi, to step down. This comes in the wake of a stern reprimand from the Supreme Court for delaying the clearance of bills passed by the Tamil Nadu government.

The apex court has since set strict deadlines for all governors across the country to act on pending legislation. Following this judicial admonition, opposition parties and sections of the media have intensified calls for Governor Ravi’s resignation.
