The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a four-day rain alert for Telangana, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall across several districts from May 19 to May 22, due to an upper air cyclonic circulation over the southeast Bay of Bengal.

Hyderabad and multiple districts have been placed under an orange alert, signaling a high probability of heavy rainfall, while others remain under a yellow alert, indicating the likelihood of moderate showers.

According to the IMD, the cyclonic circulation, coupled with moist winds from the Bay of Bengal, will bring light to moderate rains, thunderstorms, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 km/h.

Districts such as Hyderabad, Jagtial, Rajanna Sircilla, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Rangareddy, and Medchal-Malkajgiri are under orange alert, which may lead to waterlogging and traffic disruptions. Meanwhile, districts like Adilabad, Nizamabad, and Warangal are under yellow alert, expecting scattered rainfall.

Scattered rains in Hyderabad

Weather analyst T. Balaji, popularly known as the “Telangana Weatherman,” predicted intense storms, particularly in central, western, and southern Telangana. “Hyderabad will likely see scattered intense storms from afternoon to midnight,” he posted on X, echoing IMD projections.

While the rainfall is expected to provide relief from recent soaring temperatures—with maximums expected to dip to around 36°C—it may also impact paddy procurement operations, which have already been disrupted due to earlier weather fluctuations. With the state preparing for four days of unstable weather, residents are hopeful for relief from the heat but remain alert to the risks of flooding and disruption.
