Putting an end to swirling speculation, producers of the highly anticipated “Kalki 2898 AD” sequel have confirmed that Bollywood star Deepika Padukone will reprise her pivotal role as Sumathi in Kalki 2.

The announcement, made by Vyjayanthi Movies’ Priyanka Dutt and Swapna Dutt, dismisses rumors that the filmmakers were exploring alternative casting options due to alleged scheduling conflicts or creative differences following Deepika’s reported exit from Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit.

Deepika is integral part of Kalki story

The rumors, which gained traction on social media and entertainment portals, suggested that Deepika’s post-motherhood work preferences, including demands for shorter working hours, had caused friction with the Kalki 2 team. Some reports claimed director Nag Ashwin was considering replacing her due to her “inflexible” schedule.

However, insiders close to the production have categorically denied these claims, stating, “There’s been no shoot, no interaction, and therefore, no fallout,” as the film remains in pre-production.

At the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, producers Priyanka and Swapna Dutt shared that 30-35% of Kalki 2 has already been shot during the production of the first film, with Deepika’s character, Sumathi, remaining integral to the storyline.

“She will still be the mother in some parts of the film,” they confirmed.

Director Nag Ashwin has previously emphasized the importance of Deepika’s role, stating, “If you remove her, there is no story, there is no Kalki 2898 AD,” underscoring Sumathi’s centrality as the prophesied mother of Kalki in the dystopian sci-fi epic rooted in Indian mythology.

The first film, released on June 27, 2024, was a global hit, grossing over Rs. 1000 crore.

Fall out with Vanga

The speculation about Deepika’s exit appears to have stemmed from her fallout with Spirit director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, who replaced her with Triptii Dimri after disagreements over working conditions and remuneration. However, sources have clarified that this conflict has no bearing on her involvement in Kalki 2, with producers dismissing any notion of tension with co-star Prabhas or the production team. With Kalki 2 set to begin principal photography in 2026, the confirmation of Deepika’s return has heightened anticipation for the sequel, which promises to expand the mythological and sci-fi saga.
