Acclaimed filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli has hailed his 2022 magnum opus RRR as the most special and defining film of his career, expressing deep pride in its portrayal of Telugu culture and its global impact.

Speaking at a special event in London, Rajamouli reflected on the film’s extraordinary journey as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performed M.M. Keeravani’s RRR score live at the iconic Royal Albert Hall during a sold-out screening—an evening that underlined the film’s cross-cultural resonance.

A special place in Rajamouli’s heart

“RRR holds a unique place in my heart. It’s not just a film; it’s a celebration of Telugu culture, our history, and our spirit,” Rajamouli said. “I’m immensely proud that it carried our ethos to every corner of the world, resonating with audiences who connected with its emotion and energy.”

The director emphasized that the film’s fictionalized narrative—centered on legendary Telugu revolutionaries Alluri Sitarama Raju (played by Ram Charan) and Komaram Bheem (Jr. NTR)—beautifully wove together themes of patriotism, friendship, and resistance. Rooted in Indic and Sanatan imagery, RRR presented a visually rich and emotionally compelling story that transcended language and borders.

A historic triumph

Released on March 25, 2022, RRR grossed over ₹1,230 crore worldwide, making it the third-highest-grossing Indian film of all time. Its global acclaim reached new heights with Naatu Naatu winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 95th Oscars—marking a historic first for an Indian feature film. The film also garnered a Golden Globe and two Critics’ Choice Awards.

Rajamouli noted that RRR’s triumph was not just commercial but deeply cultural. “Through RRR, we showcased the vibrancy of Telugu cinema, our rooted storytelling, and the power of our epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, which continue to inspire my work,” he said.

Rajamouli credited the film’s success to its emotional storytelling and universal themes, and expressed gratitude to his team. He praised the powerful performances of Ram Charan and Jr. NTR, and highlighted the contributions of composer M.M. Keeravani, whose music played a pivotal role in the film’s international acclaim.

With RRR, Rajamouli has not only delivered a global blockbuster but also elevated the stature of Telugu cinema on the world stage. As he continues to shape the future of Indian filmmaking, RRR stands as a defining chapter in his illustrious career.
