Telangana CM orders probe into Gulzar Houz fire tragedy

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has ordered a comprehensive probe into the tragic fire incident at Gulzar Houz near Charminar in Hyderabad’s Old City that claimed 17 lives, including eight children, early Sunday morning. Deeply anguished by the loss, the Chief Minister directed authorities to identify the root cause of the disaster and take robust measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The blaze erupted around 6:16 AM in a multi-use building that housed Krishna Pearls on the ground floor and residential units above. Preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have been triggered by a short circuit, according to Telangana Disaster Response and Fire Services Director General Y. Nagi Reddy.

The building’s structural limitations—including a single narrow entrance and a one-meter-wide staircase—severely hampered escape and rescue efforts. All 17 victims died due to smoke inhalation; no burn injuries were reported.

Highlighting the urgency of accountability, CM Reddy emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to identify any lapses in fire safety compliance.

Early reports suggest the building may have been in violation of setback norms, potentially with the complicity of local municipal officials. “Strict action will be taken against those found responsible. Public safety is non-negotiable,” the CM stated. He also stressed the importance of enhanced public awareness and stricter enforcement of fire safety norms through regular audits.
